This tutorial will give you the basics for making a blinkie. Use the colors of your choice, the text of your choice and any decoration you want to add.

NOTE:  If you want to make the Mini Heart I used on this example blinkie, you can make it from following my Pixel Mini Heart tutorial by clicking here!

Set your paint brush settings at: Shape - Round, Opacity, Thickness and Hardness at 100, Size 1, Blend Mode at Normal.

  1. Open a new image size 144 x 14 with a transparent background and 24 bit color. Magnify the image anywheres from 200 to 500%, whichever is more comfortable for you to work with. Flood Fill with a light color of your choice. Add text and decoration of your choice.

  2. Image - Add Borders: Symmetric 3 and a darker color of your choice. Your image should now be 150 x 20 pixels. Your darker border is 3 pixels in width. Duplicate this image (SHIFT+D).

  3. Go back to your original image and keeping in line with the border's second pixel of width, use your paint brush to draw 2 pixels of a light color starting one pixel in from your left side (See Image Below). Skip 2 pixels and paint 2 pixels of your dark color, skip 2 pixels and continue in this fashion all around the border. This is what you should have so far:

  4. Go to your duplicated image and repeat the above steps, except this time, start with your darker color reversing the order of light and dark. This is what you should have so far:

  5. Now it is time to animate! Make your first image active, Edit - Copy. From your file menu in PSP open Animation Shop. In Animation Shop, click on the Paste as New Animation Icon:

  6. Go back to PSP and make your second image active, Edit - Copy. In Animation Shop, click on the Paste After Current Icon:

  7. In Animation Shop, Edit - Select All then Animation - Frame Properties: Set at 10 then View - Animation. If everything is the way you want it, it is time to save the animation: File - Save As - "nameit.gif". You're done!
